Matt Coyle was born in 1971 and grew up in Canberra, Australia. After a short stint at art school in Sydney, Coyle turned his attention to drawing and has been working within the medium of pen and ink ever since.

Coyle has exhibited in Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney as well as appearing in group shows internationally including The Hong Kong Art Fair and Korean International Art Fair (KIAF) . The full suite of his series Worry Doll was exhibited at The Gallery of Modern Art / Queensland Art Gallery in 2008 and the same series of work was also part of the Ten Days on the Island festival in Tasmania in 2009. His drawing Still Life was part of the Dobell Prize for Drawing exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2010.

In 2009 Coyle was commissioned by Art and Australia to produce the eight page sequential series The Shades, which appeared in the magazine over four issues from Winter 2009 through to Autumn 2010. He has two published graphic novels: Worry Doll (2007, Mam Tor Publishing, UK) and Registry of Death (1996, Kitchen Sink Press, USA).

Matt Coyle is represented in Victoria by Anna Pappas Gallery  and in NSW by James Dorahy Project Space

He lives and works in Hobart, Tasmania.
