Matt Coyle was born in 1971 and grew up in Canberra, Australia. After studying painting at Sydney College of the Arts, Coyle turned his attention to graphic novels. He has two published graphic novels: Registry of Death (1996, Kitchen Sink Press, USA) and Worry Doll (2007, Mam Tor Publishing, UK).
Prints from Worry Doll have been exhibited at Damien Minton Gallery in Sydney, Criterion Gallery in Hobart, Sanderson Contemporary Art in Auckland and at the Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery, where the complete suite of work was displayed. Worry Doll @ Willow Court saw the complete work and text exhibited as part of the 2009 Ten Days on the Island arts festival in Tasmania, Australia.
Coyle exhibited a series of stand-alone drawings entitled Night Stills at Anna Pappas Gallery in Melbourne (formerly Über Gallery) in 2008. He is currently working on a new narrative driven series of drawings commissioned by Art and Australia. The Shades will appear in the Winter 2009, Spring 2009, Summer 2010 and Autumn 2010 editions of Art and Australia and will potentially continue on to become a graphic novel.
